MelancHoly
About
MelancHoly is a puzzle heavy horror JRPG hybrid inspired by Laplace's Demon.
The game is set in 1920s America where a number of strange disappearances are occurring in a small town. There is heavy suspicion that a large isolated manor on the outskirts of town is linked to these disappearances.
Overstretched law and enforcement resources are struggling to turn up any clues as to what has transpired at the manor and relatives are becoming ever more desperate for answers regarding their loved ones.
You arrive in this new town having been summoned by a frantic mother who's son has disappeared. His last known sighting was close to the manor grounds. You have already taken a healthy down payment to find this young man and return him to his mother.
Choose from 5 different classes and begin your investigation in the manor. Recruit likeminded allies and gather strength in numbers in order to crack this mystery.
Will you defy the odds and conquer the foreboding manor or are you fated to be swallowed up as it's next victim?
Game Features
- Gorgeous pixel graphics and artwork.
- Horror/nostalgic screen filter, setting an eerie atmosphere. Filter can be toggled in the Options menu.
- A creepy yet intriguing manor to explore.
- Cryptic puzzles to solve.
- 5 classes each with their own traits and abilities.
- Choice to explore solo or buddy up with a variety of thrill seekers to help you crack the manor's enigma.
- Typical first run 1.5-2.5 hours of gameplay.
Known Issues
- If you defeat an enemy by depleting it's Soul rather than Body the enemy MAY not be defeated right away and hang around for another turn in combat and will die when their turn comes up. On rare occasions I have seen an enemy with 0 Soul take their turn and attack the party to then die afterwards. Doesn't happen 100% of the time, I'm looking for a way to fix this issue.
- Soul damage gives no feedback apart from yellow damage number popups and changes to the Soul gauge in the battle HUD due to the way MZ handles different damage types. I am trying to make party members flinch as they receive Soul damage in the same way as they do Body damage in order to make it look like they have in fact been damaged rather than healed. This is the same for any attack/weapon/skill that has any draining property.

Maybe I'm stoopid but... How does one recover resources? The inn restores body/soul health, but not the mp-esque resource stat.
Resource kits recover that and they are scattered around the house, so search everywhere.
They are limited however, so don't go mental with your specials and use them sparingly.
This is a very good game! I love playing jrpg horror games and this hit the spot! I'm near the end (missing only the water marble to open the Watchtower door) but I am stuck in 2 places T-T
1) How do I obtain the piano keys? I had the E key and inserted it, but after an hour of searching the mansion I got back to the piano and the E key was missing, it's not even in my inventory (also I'm terrible at solving piano riddles) T-T
2) I think there's a bug regarding one bookcase in F2, I found a hidden item with the stimulant but I'm unable to claim it. (I've posted a picture of the spot)
Could you perhaps provide me some assistance? I'm curious to finish the game and see the ending :D
Hi and thanks for playing!
The issues you described sound like bugs that need addressing on my end; I will try get to them but I can't promise when it will get done.
It's been a hot minute since I worked on this game so an update is likely due anyway.
Despite the issues I am glad you enjoyed the game!
